Membership

As with most student-run societies, the Edinburgh University Music Society is shaped by its members. Without them, we would be little more than a pile of disused music stands. We are run by our members, for our members.

Anyone can become a member. Annual subscriptions cost £40 for students and £80 for non-students. Semester-long memberships are also available at £25 for students and £50 for non-students. Membership fees are not compulsory in the first few weeks of term, giving new players the chance to try rehearsals before committing.

Memberships can be purchased online via the Edinburgh University Students’ Association website, by bank transfer, or in person at some rehearsals using a card reader. Cash payments can also be accepted if required.

Membership gives you the opportunity to take part in all our ensembles, but some require auditions:

  • Chorus: No audition required — simply come along to a rehearsal and speak to the Chorus Manager.
  • Sinfonia: String players do not need to audition. Other sections must arrange an audition during Freshers’ Week.
  • Symphony Orchestra: Audition required, arranged during Freshers’ Week.

Details about auditions are circulated ahead of time.

Members are involved in all stages of the decision making process, through interacting with our Ensemble Managers and by speaking directly to our committee. This includes our concerts, socials and tour, along with the general running of the society.

All members are required to adhere to our constitution, which defines the manner in which the society should be run. This can be accessed here.
