Elgar’s Enigma Variations

The EUMS Symphony Orchestra is one of the largest and oldest orchestras in Scotland. It is the society’s only fully auditioned ensemble.

Under the careful guidance of Will Conway, the orchestra aims to provide students with the opportunity to play large-scale orchestral works to a very high standard. Concerts are given at the end of each semester in various locations around Edinburgh, including Greyfriars Kirk and McEwan Hall. Past performances have included Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony, Borodin’s 2nd Symphony, Bruckner’s 7th Symphony, and Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen

In March 2025, Symphony Orchestra teamed up with Chorus to perform Brahms’s Requiem in the magnificent McEwan Hall.

As a group of musicians, Symphony Orchestra has a diverse membership and strong engagement with the wider community. Our players come from all over the globe, and while some are Music students, there are a large number that study all sorts of degrees. Through both our education projects and our outreach programs, the orchestra commits itself to helping communicate the benefits and delights of classical music to as many people as possible. In previous years, a brand new education project had some of our orchestra members go into primary schools to teach children about the science of music.
